How the Nations League works

The idea behind the Nations League is simple: national teams of a similar level play each other, and every team has something to play for.

The leagues

Europe's national teams are split into several leagues based on their level, from League A, the top tier, down to the lower leagues. Each league is divided into groups, where teams play each other home and away.

The number of leagues, and of teams promoted or relegated, can change from one edition to the next, depending on UEFA's decisions.

The finals stage

The best-placed teams in the League A groups reach the quarter-finals, played over two legs. The winners advance to the Finals, which include the semi-finals, the final and the third-place match. The team that wins the final lifts the trophy.

Promotion and relegation

At the end of the group stage, the group winners in the lower leagues move up to the league above. The bottom teams in the higher leagues drop down.

Promotion and relegation play-offs

Between promotion and relegation there is a middle ground. Mid-table teams in the higher leagues face the best-placed teams from the league below in two-legged play-offs. The winners secure a place in the higher league for the next edition.

Follow your national team in the Nations League

Watching your national team live in the Nations League feels very different from a friendly. Every match counts: for the group standings, for the race to the title, or for staying in the higher league. On the pitch you will find Europe's leading national teams, in official matches played with real intensity.

Whether your team plays at home or abroad, every match is also a chance to travel.

With EsaSport Ticket + Hotel packages, you can enjoy the city beyond the stadium, before and after the match. It is up to you: stay just for matchday, or extend your trip and discover everything the city has to offer.

Nations League matches are an experience for everyone: couples, families, groups of friends and lifelong supporters. All you need is a passion for your national team.

Matches available on EsaSport

The Nations League calendar takes shape step by step. Draws and later stages, such as the quarter-finals, play-offs and Finals, set up new fixtures as the tournament goes on. That is why new matches may become available on EsaSport as the competition progresses.
